Handwriting in the Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Early Years Foundation Stage

In the Early Years, developing fine motor skills and core strength is essential for supporting children as they progress from mark-making to writing. Activities such as threading, cutting, manipulating playdough, and balancing tasks help build the small hand muscles and stability needed for effective handwriting.

By the end of the Reception year, children are expected to:

  • Hold a pencil effectively using a pincer grip.
  • Form recognisable letters, with most being correctly formed.

At this stage, most children will be printing their letters, and while handwriting may be legible and show good control of letter size, there may still be inconsistencies in the formation of descender letters, such as 'g', 'y', and 'p'. These letters should sit on the line, with their tails extending neatly below. Developing this precision will remain an area of focus as children transition into Key Stage 1.

Through consistent support and practice, we ensure that children in the Early Years build a strong foundation for fluent and confident handwriting.
