Promoting British Values at Mount Stewart Federation

In 2011, the government identified key British Values: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. At Mount Stewart Federation, we actively embody these values through our comprehensive school values curriculum and various enrichment activities. Our multi-faith curriculum, acknowledging the uniqueness of each pupil, is crafted to empower them to recognise their vocations and to become proactive citizens contributing positively to the world.

Democracy in Action At Mount Stewart Federation, a UNICEF Rights Respecting School, we empower our pupils in decision-making processes. They contribute to class charters annually, aligning with UN CRC Article 12, which asserts the right of children to express their views in matters affecting them. Pupil's voice is further strengthened through groups like curriculum leaders, RRSA ambassadors, and the school council. We also instil respect for the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, teaching about the rights and responsibilities entailed in a democratic society.

Upholding the Rule of Law We consistently reinforce the importance of laws, whether they govern the class, school, or country. This is in line with UN CRC Article 19, focusing on the protection of children from harm. Our Behaviour for Learning Policy sets high standards for pupil conduct, rewarding good behaviour and recognising the demonstration of our school virtues. Police officer visits and themed days contribute to understanding the role of laws in society.

Fostering Individual Liberty Our values-based discussions and acts of worship focus on self-respect and self-worth. We encourage pupils to think independently and make informed choices, resonating with UN CRC Articles 31 and 15, which emphasise the right to rest, play, meet together, and join groups. Activities like school clubs offer opportunities for pursuing personal interests in arts, sports, and more, teaching pupils about online safety and personal responsibility.

Cultivating Mutual Respect As a Rights Respecting School, mutual respect is at our core. Children learn about the impact of their behaviours on their own and others' rights, in line with UN CRC Articles 2 and 30, focusing on non-discrimination and the rights to practice one's own culture, language, and religion. Our RHE Jigsaw curriculum and special assemblies help foster an understanding and respectful environment.

Encouraging Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs In our culturally diverse setting, we emphasise the importance of understanding and respecting all faiths and beliefs. We celebrate significant religious festivals like Ramadan and Diwali to enhance our pupils' awareness and respect for different cultures and religions, aligning with UN CRC Article 14 on the freedom of thought, belief, and religion.

These values are not just taught but lived out daily, forming the foundation of our ethos at Mount Stewart Federation.
